We’re pleased to share our newly released Annual Report for 2023-2024, Enabling Local Actors to Create Change.

This past year marked an exciting phase of growth for our organization as we launched multiple, multi-year projects across Africa, strengthening our commitment to empowering local communities to lead change in natural resource management. These projects represent a strategic expansion, building on past successes and addressing the evolving challenges in the natural resources sector.

Simultaneously, this was a period of reflection and celebration for our team as we concluded our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan. Together, we recognized key achievements, embraced the lessons learned, and set the foundation for the next stage of growth through our 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, Enabling Change.

In 2023-2024, our new multi-year projects have built on previous learnings, furthering capacity building and knowledge transfer to local partners:
  • In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Challenging Corruption project equips local civil society with tools to monitor corruption in the artisanal cobalt sector more effectively by tracking informal payments.
  • Through the Powering Resilience project, spanning four provinces in DRC, artisanal mining communities at the forefront of the green energy transition are empowered to protect and restore degraded forests while adapting to climate change.
  • Across the Great Lakes region, through the Peace and Security project, we have renewed our longstanding partnership with the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) to enhance mineral governance, leveraging artisanal mineral flows to bolster security and stability.
Read our Annual Report for highlights from our work in 2023-2024:
  • Identifying the root causes of child labour in DRC’s cobalt sector
  • Mining communities protecting the ‘Lungs of Africa’ in DRC
  • Growing efforts in formalization and mercury reduction among Uganda’s artisanal gold miners
  • Supporting the ICGLR to unlock the potential of artisanal mining in the Great Lakes Region
  • Transparency as a tool to uncover corruption in DRC’s artisanal cobalt supply chain

We thank all our funders, partners, supporters—and most of all, the communities we work with—for their continued support. We look forward to building on the results we achieved together this year.
